On October 11-12, 2001 a provincial conference
on tobacco, "Tobacco - Nova Scotia Communities Taking Action",
was held at the Kespuwick Training Centre in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia
with 170 participants.
The conference was designed to help these participants:
- recognize the need for a comprehensive and coordinated
approach to reducing the harms related to tobacco use;
- learn new practical skills to assist them in their
tobacco-related work;
- build new partnerships; and,
- begin or continue efforts to reduce the harms
related to tobacco use in their communities.
Since 1994, Smoke-Free Kings has been committed to working on issues
related to tobacco that foster healthy community development throughout
Kings County. Smoke-Free Kings is an organization made up of professionals
and
volunteers committed to reducing the harm related to tobacco use and
exposure to tobacco smoke in Kings County.
For some time, members of Smoke-Free Kings have talked
about the idea
of hosting a tobacco conference. Through partnering with other organizations,
namely Addiction Services, Districts 1, 2 and 3, Cancer Care Nova Scotia,
Canadian Cancer Society, Nova Scotia Division, EKM Community Health
Centre, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Medical Society
of Nova Scotia, and the Tobacco Control Unit of the Nova Scotia Department
of Health, this conference became a reality.
