Taking Action Action in District Health Authorities and Provincial Organizations

 

Taxation:

DHA 2

  • Taxation: find out if the provincial government receives any money from the tobacco industry
  • Hold government accountable to do what they said they would
  • Point out that it is fiscally responsible to raise tobacco taxes. Raises revenue and reduces health care costs
  • Organize a list of people willing to participate in a telephone tree
  • Encourage and educate community to be part of the "action process".
  • Letter writing campaign: email, fax, etc…constantly and ongoing
  • Question politicians at every chance or meeting

  • Identify and engage physicians for lobbying government for legislation around taxation.

  • Lobby/support for taxation

  • Lobbying for taxation
  • Make government accountable (ie. under age illegal possession, taxes gained).
  • Demand public input into wording of the legislation
  • Ask questions of government, "Where are the tax dollars going from illegal sales of tobacco?"

DHA 8

  • Lobby to have portion of tobacco tax collected in Nova Scotia directed to sustain the tobacco smoke-free initiatives
  • Increase tax on cigarettes and set per capita rate and this money be directed to a "smoke-free" environment

Provincial & Other Organizations

  • Collective voice through partnerships
  • Meet with Finance Minister to discuss financial issue (Prov/Fed).
  • Increase taxation on tobacco and tobacco related paraphernalia to the highest possible figure.
