HALIFAX
-- Nova Scotia appears to be making progress in the
battle against smoking.
A recent
national survey shows the province has the fourth lowest smoking
prevalence rate in Canada.
The percentage
of smokers in Nova Scotia dropped from 30 per cent in 2000 to
25 per cent in 2001.
That's a
drop of approximately 35,000.
The Canadian
Cancer Society Nova Scotia Division credits a combination of
tobacco tax increases and the passage of smoke free by-laws.
The national
smoking rate dropped to 22 per cent in 2001 from 24 per cent
in 2000.
