National Survey Shows the Province has
the Fourth Lowest Smoking Prevalence Rate in Canada

HALIFAX -- Nova Scotia appears to be making progress in the battle against smoking.

A recent national survey shows the province has the fourth lowest smoking prevalence rate in Canada.

The percentage of smokers in Nova Scotia dropped from 30 per cent in 2000 to 25 per cent in 2001.

That's a drop of approximately 35,000.

The Canadian Cancer Society Nova Scotia Division credits a combination of tobacco tax increases and the passage of smoke free by-laws.

The national smoking rate dropped to 22 per cent in 2001 from 24 per cent in 2000.
