Halifax - The NDP is changing tactics in an
effort to breathe new life into the fight against the Hamm government's
anti-smoking law. On Friday, New Democrat Maureen MacDonald
tabled her own anti-smoking bill that's much tougher than what
the Tories are proposing. It bans all smoking in public places
and it also provides for compensation for non-smokers who worked
in smoke-filled surroundings.
"We know that there's a 50 per cent higher
incidence of lung disease for people who work in these industries
who are exposed to second-hand smoke," she said. "So
it's time that's reflected in our occupational health and safety
provisions and in our worker's compensation program."
MacDonald says she'll bring in her bill for
debate next week during opposition day. Opposition bills almost
never become law. Meanwhile, Conservative MLAs are dragging
out debate on Bill 125 to prevent one of their back bench members
from amending the proposed law. That tactic also prevents the
opposition from trying to change the bill.
