HALIFAX (CP) -- Nova Scotia's new anti-smoking bill will fall short of an all-out ban, the province's health minister hinted Wednesday. The Tory government will announce its new anti-smoking legislation Friday. Health Minister Jamie Muir wouldn't say exactly what measures the bill would include. However, he said some municipalities may want to go further than the coming legislation by adopting stricter bylaws. "If what they wish to implement would be more rigorous than what the province wishes to implement, then the municipality would have the right to do that," Muir said. Some municipalities in the Annapolis Valley and other areas have already banned smoking in all public places. Liberal Leader Wayne Gaudet said Nova Scotians are calling for a provincewide smoking ban in all public places, including bars and restaurants. The idea of a complete ban has run into opposition from bar and restaurant owners, who say the move will cost them customers.
