Smoke-Free Legislation: DHA 2 Support smoke-free environment in public places Put a proposal forward to the DHA to support smoke-free legislation To enforce 30 meter smoke/scent free. To educate municipal counsellors/get support for smoke-free legislation Emphasis on youth program: school board, H & S boards DHA 3 Youth are a strong voice, they have the energy and ideas, we need to rally them to be strong advocates, to push their parents to push one legislator - "NSSSA" - great organization. Letter of support from our CHB to encourage smoke-free legislation All go to next (Kentville) town hall meetings and speak up. Conduct opinion poll regarding physicians for smoke-free legislation (high results). Encourage citizens to lobby Mark Parent (MLA) to support smoke-free bylaw. Provide MLA with "credible" information. Media advocacy: Use opinion poll (second hand smoke) to highlight Kings County residents' desire for legislation Presentation to CHB for legislation and sustain funding DHA 4 Legislature opens early November. Let's all be there to congratulate DHA 6 Media campaign DHA 7 Educate the tobacco "people" about the truths about legislation Continuous pressure on government and politicians for firm commitment on tobacco legislation Lobbying for healthy public policy…"smoke-free" DHA 8 Support initiatives to support smoke-free policy in neighbouring municipal units Lobby local MLAs to make sure smoke-free legislation is introduced in the spring sitting of Nova Scotia legislature Maintain an open line of communication with the groups assembled and outside agencies that were not represented at conference Provincial & Other Organizations Contact the Minister of Health/Premier and call their cabinet colleagues to start listening to us instead of tobacco industry Taking the first step to educate and make contact with policy makers Collective voice to advocate Sustainable financing. We are looking from the wrong angle. Each community in which [we] want to be smoke-free to put the public bills right to the Provincial Legislation from each community stating that no youth under the age of 19 may consume tobacco of any form under the jurisdiction of Nova Scotia.
