Rural Communities Foundation of Nova Scotia Call for Proposals

Rural Communities Foundation of Nova Scotia Announces Rural Leadership Initiative Grants for 2009

In November 2007 the Rural Communities Foundation of Nova Scotia agreed there was a need to raise the awareness of the issues of rural and coastal Nova Scotia and to examine the growing divide that exists between the challenges facing rural Nova Scotia and those of urban areas.  After contracting a research paper and consultations with key stakeholders, the idea emerged that leadership was one of the key challenges in sustaining rural Nova Scotia.  Although this appears reasonably simple, the idea of leadership is complex.

The need for more attention to this leadership issue was recognized and as a result the Rural Communities Foundation Board adopted the following goal for their granting program for 2008-2009:

 “to promote rural leadership that will blend traditional community values with emerging community needs”.
The Rural Communities Foundation of Nova Scotia has been investing in rural communities since 2004. The volunteer-run foundation has granted close to $30,000 in support of over 25 charitable organizations in more than 20 communities. The three recipients of the 2008 Rural Leadership Initiative Grant Program were:

Digby Area Learning Association for their Project Earl (Educating Adults for Rural Leadership) which included 3 components: group mentorship, skill building and inspirational workshops, and portfolio development;

Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute for their project Empower! which created a network for young environmental leaders in southwest Nova Scotia to share ideas and learn new skills; and

Bay St. Lawrence Community Centre for their project Seniors-Youth Volunteer Time Banking for Community Development.

The “Rural Leadership Initiative” granting program will continue in 2009, guideline and application are attached. Feel free to distribute to your contacts.

The guidelines have been tightened up a bit from last year with the following priorities:

Leadership - enhance the leadership within rural communities.
Capacity building - enhance skill and leadership capacity.
Partnerships and community support – clearly identify and build on existing resources in the community.
Public awareness – increase the understanding of the impact of leadership on rural communities.

A typical grant size will be between $1000 and $5000 for projects. Total funds available for the Rural Leadership Initiative in 2009 are $15,000 with deadline for application on November 2, 2009 and disbursements completed by December 31, 2009.

The Rural Communities Foundation of Nova Scotia is responsive to the needs of rural Nova Scotians. Its mission is to build on the strengths and assets of Nova Scotia’s coastal and rural communities by encouraging philanthropic giving, developing a permanent endowment fund and managing the granting of funds.

Attached are the guidelines and application form.
